Have you ever thought about the subject matter we are about to discuss? I believe that before searched for this subject on google or any other search engine, you were hungry to really know how Introverts can actually cope with school activities.School is designed for extroverts. It is a loud, busy and dedicated environment for extroverts to actually thrive. This is how nature has made it to be. There is extra-curricular and meetings to attend, discussion classes, not to mention friendship groups and drama to talk about. These are all strange to an Introvert. The question now comes. If the school setting is designed to majorly fit the extroverts, does it mean that introverts cannot thrive in school again?
Who is an IntrovertAn Introvert is a person, an individual, who gets his energy from being alone. They feel tired when they are around people. They get easily exhausted when in the crowd. An Extrovert on the other side is a person who derives energy from being with other people. They feel revitalized when they are in large crowd. They are usually labelled as shy students.
There are biological differences between an introvert and an extrovert.
Our brain produces dopamine which causes us to seek out stimulation (excitement, noise, risk) so that our brain operates at optimum arousal. It is worth noting that introverts and extroverts may produce the same amount of Dopamine, but the difference is the uptake that occurs.
The grey matter in the prefrontal cortex of introverts is thicker than in extroverts. This predisposes them to deeper thought, planning and quiet activity.
OOH.. I can say that our brain is therefore complex.According to statistics, there are 30% introverts and 70% extroverts.Having seen the differences, let us now see how being an introvert can affect you while in school.
Introverts in School – Effect on them and How to How to help them Thrive
It is true that introverts struggle while in the school especially in the classroom. The classroom is a place where much of questions, answers, discussions will be taking place. But there is an introvert who does not like all these. He/She prefers to be alone, quiet, and much of thinking before talking. Most of the students that are introverts are taken to be dull in school if you are not close to them. Because of their quietness, most extrovert students may try to look down on them, some think they are proud because they do not talk or relate much with them.As an introvert, if care is not taken, these are some of the things you may try doing:
It is obvious that an introvert in school may be tempted to skip lectures due to the reason that he/she gets exhausted when in the classroom or involves in conversation. It is not h is/her fault. That is how nature has made him/her to be.They will love to socialize with people, but find it difficult to do so. Some of the anxious introvert may begin to feel sweat on their body before approaching the classroom which only leaves the individual drained. So anytime you see an introvert missing lectures, you can assist him/her. Persuade him/her to go for his/her lectures. If possible, do a follow-up to see how thy do.
Trying to be like an extrovert:
Some of the introverts in school, because they love how introverts carry the class along, they may try to feel among by copying them which is very bad. You have to be yourself. You cannot change your nature. So anytime you see that extrovert moving around the class, know it that that is his only way to get charged and energized. An introvert meed to be quiet, calm, gentle, talk when necessary…you know the rest. 2. Avoiding Presentation and other public speaking activities:Another way an introvert may be affected is in the area of presentation. They seem to avoid public speaking due to the fear. The anxious introverts are the ones that fall victims of this. Introverts generally do not like small talk. They love when you give them opportunity to talk on what they know well. Some other things to help introverts thrive well in school will include the following:
Introducing Quiet times which involves activities that do not involve much conversation.
School should try to understand these personality type in most students. It is time we stop equating busy and loud with normal.
Just because a child is shy doesn’t mean they do not have something to say. They talk most in small groups. When given opportunity, they can talk endlessly provided they are good in that field.
Introverts need to think before they talk. Therefore an introverted student who fails to answer a question when asked in an impromptu manner shouldn’t be taken to be a dullard.
In conclusion, we cannot say that introverts aren’t bright in school. In fact, they are very creative students, most of them with high IQ, brilliant, some persons do even go further to take quiet students to be intelligent which is true.As an introvert student in school, there are so many challenges you will be facing in school. The best advice I will give is that .
Try to be yourself. Do not try to be like the other person
Do not struggle with it. You cannot change it as it is your nature which if utilized effectively, can make you an outstanding student.
You are not the only introvert in the class. Try to locate another. You can make friends with him/her.
Do not skip classes. Try as much as possible to attend lectures. Push yourself out of that comfort zone.
Practice speaking with a mirror.
Do retract to hiding place to recharge your energy when you feel exhausted.
